Pfc Hankins received the Bronze Star posthumously. The citation read in part, “… by direction of the President, The Bronze Star Medal is prsented posthuously to Private First Class Albert R. Hankins for distinguishing himself by outstanding, meritorious service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period, 25 January 1971 to 8 May 1971.”
According to the perosnal affairs officier at Fort Benjamin Harrison, the 22-year old Hankins was killed May 8, 1971 when he was struck by debris from an excavator while standing in an airport landing zone. Hankins was a graduate of Powell High School, Powell, Tenn. and attended the University of Tennessee for three years before entering the service.
