Charles Robert Hankins was born on 10 September 1917 at Rock Springs, Georgia to Emmet Washington Hankins and Mary Inez Weaver.

1st Lt Hankins was lost in the crash of aircraft P-38E with serial number 41-2082 at Port Angeles, Clallam, Washington. He is buried at Rock Spring Cemetery, Rock Spring, Walker County, Georgia.

First Lieutenant Charles R. Hankins, 25-year-old air corps pilot from 3903 Twenfth avenue, was killed Wednesday afternoon in the crash of his plane near Port Angeles, Wash., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Hankins, were notified yesterday. Lieut. Hankins, a graduate of Central High School, attended the University of Chattanooga, where het ook preflight training under the civilian pilot training program. The young officer was killed while flying a twin-engined plane, his family believes, because he was graduated from the twin-engine school at Lubbock, Tex., and had been stationed at Port Angeles. Second Lieutenant Willian H. Wilson III, of 352 Derby Circle, also a member of the twin-engined graduating class, was killed Aug. 22 in the crash near Seattle. He was flying one of the same type planes believed used by Lieut. Hankins. Lieut. Hankins was a member of the East Lake Baptist church. At the university he was a member of the choir, the Orpheus club, University Players and the school track team.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. C.G. Hankins, of Rock Springs, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. E.L. Schaerer, and a brother, Henry Hankins, both of Chattanooga.
