The Standard Banner, 18 May 1944
The Rockwood Times carries a story this wee stating that Mrs. Lula H. Thomas of that city has been given further particulars of the death of her nephew, Cpl. Casper W. “Cap” Hinds who had been previously reported missing in action on Nov. 26. Cpl. Hinds was aboard an Allied troop ship which was sunk as a direct result of enemy action in the European theater and not the North African area as previously stated. The ship the name of which, together with other details, can not yet be made public for reasons of security, was struck at night and sank rapidly in a heavy sea. Every effort was made to rescue all aboard but many were lost according to the letter received by Mrs. Thomas. The last message Mrs. Thomas had from her nephew was a Christmas card sent November 10, on which he had written, “There is no telling where I’ll be Christmas.”
“Cap” was employed for several years in the Standard office and was well known here.
Pvt. Hinds had been in service since November 1942, during which time he studied radio work in the Army Air Corps. While in Jefferson City he resided with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Hickey. Casper was a passenger on the HMT Rohna. The Rohna and four other troop ships left Oran in French Algeria with cargo and troops. Off Béjaïa, Algeria the convoy was attacked by an estimated 60 German Luftwaffe Heinkel 177’s. One of the 177’s, piloted by Hans Dochtermann, released a glide bomb that hit Rohna on her port side and she eventually sank.
