D.L. Messer was born on 2 November 1921, the son of John Dallas Messer and Martha Izola “Zola” Howard.
He was killed in action on 8 July 1944 in Normandy, France

Pfc. Messer, a former employe of the Cleveland Chair Company, entered the service in October, 1942, and went overseas in March, 1944. Besides his parents he was survived by four sisters, Ruby, Bertie, Blanche and Dorothy; five brothers, Earl, Hoyt, Gene, John Jr. and Pfc. W.C. Messer, serving somewhere overseas.
