An explanation of Tech. Cpl. Daniel F. Welch’s death has been made to his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Broughton Welch, 513 Arthur Street, by the soldier’s commanding officer, Capt. John E. Billingsley. Cpl. Welch died Jan. 3 from wounds received the day before when a firearm was “discharged accidentally.” He failed to respond to transfusions and an operation and died with regaining consciousness. He was buried with full military honors in France. Capt. Billingsley wrote. The officer praised Cpl. Welch, a “good soldier, a hard worker.”Cpl. Welch entered the service Dec. 2, 1942, and had been overseas 19 months.
