I have been waiting fifty two years to write this letter as a tribute and remembrance to Gary. Until this Memorial Day there was no way of sending these words to the people who knew Gary. Thanks to the USAA, upon dedicating a poppy to Gary, I found this web-site. It was a privilege and honor to be friends and to serve with him. Gary was a fine Christian man and soldier, a role model to others. Someone that everyone in our platoon could look up to as a example to follow.
Gary often talked about a girl back home named Charlotte. I know he must have had deep feelings for her.
My memory of Gary has not faded and never will. He made a lasting difference in my life. There is a picture attachment of us together at the Ninth Inf. Div. base camp.
His memory will always be alive. Hoping these words will be an encouragement to you as his life was to me.
In lasting memory to Gary,
Sincerely,
Charles Thieme

Gary was an uncle you could never forget; he loved muscle cars. I was 9 years old when he was taken. I’m 63 now and still remember his smile when he got to see my twin brothers and me. My father, MSGT James H Carter, was the one that escorted Gary’s body home from San Francisco to Tennessee. Gary was the uncle you could never forget.
