Herbert McClellan Smith was born 20 January 1923 in Oneida, Tennessee. He was the son of Anderson S. Smith and Elmira Carson.
He died 27 June 1944 in Gulfport, Mississippi

The body of Herbert M. Smith, coxswain, a trainee at the Naval Training Center, Gulfport, who drowned while swimming in Wolf river Tuesday night, will be taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Smith, Oneida, Tenn., today for services. A naval escort was born January 20, 1923 in Oneida and entered the Navy March 17, 1943. Most of his time in the Navy has been spent at the Gulfport base. A coroner’s jury was empaneled by A.G. (Gus) Bellande, Harrison County coroner and ranger, with Sheriff’s Deputy L.A. Krohn acting as bailiff to investigate the drowning. The jury verdict was death by accidental drowning, the coroner said.
