Staff Sergt. Hugh D. Eller, 31, former Census Bureau employe, was reported killed in action in Italy by the War Department today. Sergt. Eller, who lived at 132 C street N.E. before entering the Army in September, 1941, was killed on his birthday, July 23, according to a brother, Lt. (j.g.) Charles C. Eller, who is attached to the Navy Department’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery here. Sergt. Eller was shipped to Northern Ireland in May, 1942, and in December, 1942, participated in the fighting in North Africa. After a rest, he fought in the battle for Cassino and was in the group making the junction with the troops at Anzio. Two of his brothers and a sister are in the service. The sister WAC Pfc. Dorothy F. Eller, is in Australia. His mother, Mrs. Jessie Eller, lives in Copperhill, Tenn.
