James Conly Smith, born on 5 March 1923 in Rhea County, son of Charles A. Smith of Spring City. He was married to Gwendolyn Middlebrooks in 1943 while he was stationed at Morrison Field in Florida.
Sgt. Smith served in the Pacific theater, returned to the United States in January 1946 and would have received his discharge from the Air Corps at Camp Chaffee, Ark.
He died on 28 February 1946 in the veterans hospital in Atlanta, Georgia while undergoing an operation. He is buried in Spring City Cemetery.
