James Horace Foster was the son of Larkin Johnson Foster and Minta Ladeca Edwards.
Sergeant James H. Foster, US Army, was assigned to 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division. The Division relieved British units holding the line before Mount Cassino in the Mitturno area on the 5th of March 1944. The Division engaged in defensive patrolling and training until May.
Sergeant Forester was killed in action on the 11th of March 1944. He was initially buried at Carono Cemetery at Carono, Italy and reburied at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, H,10,52, Nettuno, Italy.
Awards include the Purple Heart.

Mrs. L.J. Foster of Erwin, route 1, has been advised by telegram by the War Department that her son, Sgt. James Horace Foster, 22, was killed in action in Italy. Details are to follow. Sergeant Foster was a member of a machine gunners squadron in the U.S. Infantry. He entered service in the summer of 1942 and took training at Camp Gruber, Okla, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and was on maneuvers in Louisiana. He was one of four foster brothers in military service with another scheduled to leave this week. Pfc. Warren Foster is in New Guinea; Staff Sgt. L.J. Foster, Jr., is in a rest camp in the Southwest Pacific after seeing action in the Marshall Islands; and Carl Foster entered the Marine Corps two months ago and is in training in San Diego, Calif. The fifth son, Guy Foster, will leave for induction this week. Other survivors besides the mother and service brothers are two sisters, Mrs. Otto Poteat of Johnson City and Helen Foster of Erwin; four brothers, Clyde, Kyle, Harold and Paul. The family home is on Banner Hill on the old Asheville highway.
