James Porter Greene Jr. was born at Chickamauga, Georgia, the son of James Porter Greene Sr. and Martha Linda Duncan.
He married Mary Elizabeth Owen at the first Baptist church in Rossville on 29 November 1943.

Pvt. James P. Greene Jr., 22, husband of Mrs. Mary Owens Greene, 1102 Greenwood Avenue, and son of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Greene, 4321 Lazard Avenue was killed in action with a tank division Nov. 22 in Germany, the War Department informed his parents last night. A graduate of Central High School in the class of 1941, he was employed at the American Lava Company prior to entering the army in October, 1943. He received training at Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Meade, Md., and went overseas last April. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Pvt. Roy L. Greene, stationed with an army unit at Longview, Tex.; Quinn Greene, 1907 South Willow Street; Wallace Greene, Boynton, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. L.D. Eidson, and Mrs. J.L. Johnson, 4321 Lazard Street and Miss Edna Greene, employe of the Southland New company of Chattanooga.
