John Manning was born 11 December 1915 to Wyley Manning and Nancy Lee. Husband of Velva Cook Griffen. His father was first married to Nola Rhea Janeway who died in 1910. They had 3 sons, Andrew Lee, Willie Lewis and Lewis Grande Janeway Manning. His father remarried with Nancy Lee and they had 3 sons and a daughter, Wiley, John, Noah Robert and Laura Martha Manning. His mother Nancy Lee died in 1924 after which his father married with Laura Brogan. His father died in 1934.

Pfc. John Manning, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wylie Manning, Thorn Hill, Tenn. Born December 11, 1915 in Claiborne County. He entered the service November 20, 1942. He served with the 349th Infantry, 88th Division. He was killed in action in Italy, Oct. 10, 1944. He was married to Velva Griffin. To this Union one daughter, Edith, was born. His father and mother, infant sister and half-brother preceeded him in death. He is survived by his wife, daughter and two sisters, Mrs. Robert Griffin and Mrs. George Brogen of Ohio; three brothers, Henry Manning of Ohio’; Mylie and Noah Manning of Tazewell, Tenn.; three half-sisters, Myrtle, Mary and Inez Manning, all of Tazewell; two half-brothers, Willie Manning, Bean Station; Roy Manning, Tazewell, other relatives and friends.
