Leslie Raymond Runyan was born on 30 January 1909 at Chattanooga, Tennessee, the son of Leslie Henegar Runyan and Jennie Ashley. His mother died in 1913 and his father married Lillly Butcher. Leslie Runyan married Bessie Michel in 1940.

Pvt. Leslie Raymond Runyan, 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie H. Runyan, 403 Graham Avenue, and husband of Mrs. Bessie Runyan, was killed in action in Italy May 13, his family was informed yesterday by the War Department. Pvt Runyan, who had been a statistician here with the Tennessee Valley Authority for about nine years before entering the army last August, went overseas last February. His last letter to his wife, also employed by the TVA, was written from “somewhere in Italy” on May 13, the day he died. He was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Chattanooga. He was a member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church. His father said a telegram from he War Department informed the family of his son’s death was received yesterday, with the information that a letter concerning details would follow soon.
