Leonard Wesley Taylor was born 30 April 1922 in Erwin, Tennessee. He was the son of Rhudy M. Taylor and Pearl Rogers.

The body of Sergeant Leonard W. (Jack) Taylor, who was killed in action in Italy in September, 1944, arrived in Erwin for reburial. He was 22 at the time of his death. Taylor who had been missing in action since September 25, 1944, while in action with an army infantry unit, entered military service September 28, 1942. He underwent basic training at Camp Gruber, Okla., and completed training at Camp Texas. He was assigned to overseas combat duty in November 1943. He attended schools in Washington County, including Embreeville, and was employed at Holston Ordnance Works near Kingsport, prior to his entry into the armed forces. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He participated in three major engagements and had been awarded three battle stars and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. While stationed at Camp Gruber he spent a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Taylor, N. Elm Street. Survivors include his parents; three sisters, Mrs. Hubert Ruble, Mrs. Joe Erwin and Miss Mildred Taylor, all of Erwin.
