Ralph Holloway served aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Indianapolis as Seaman Second Class. After delivering the components for the atomic bomb to Tinian Island, his ship was torpedoed and sunk July 30, 1945. He was lost at sea along with 879 fellow crewmen.

The U.S.S. Indianapolis sailed from San Francisco, California, in July 1945 on a special high-speed run to Guam, carrying essential atomic bomb material. She delivered her unusual cargo and was lost after leaving Guam.

The Indianapolis, traditionally the flagship of the great Fifth Fleet, was sunk with a heavy loss of life. Every person aboard was listed on the casualty list which totalled 1,196 as follows: 5 Navy dead, including one officer; 845 Navy missing, including 63 officers; 307 Navy wounded, including 15 officers; 30 Marine Corps missing, including two officers; nine enlisted Marine Corps wounded.
