Funeral services for Pfc. Roy C. Wilkerson, son of Gladys and Roy Wilkerson, were held Sunday. Oct. 31 at the Stewart Funeral Home here. Graveside services were in charge of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Burial was in the Wamego cemetery. Pfc. Wilkerson as born Oct. 21, 1924, on his maternal grandmother’s farm northwest of Wamego, and lost his life on Pelelieu, Palua Island, Sept. 18. 1944 while serving in the First Division of the Marines. Wilkerson was inducted at Kingsport, Tenn., Oct. 21, 1943 and began his training at San Diego, Calif. He shipped out to the South Pacific April 9, 1944. He attended grade school in Wamego and two years at Wamego High School. He was employed as an ironworker for the Frazer-Brace construction Co., at Kingsport, Tenn. Previous to his induction. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Gladys Talley and his step-father, Russell Talley of Wamego; one brother, Ray Wilkerson of Hammond, Ind.; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Norton, Pocomoke City, Maryland; Mrs. Evalucille Bounds, Hammond, Ind.; and Georgette Talley, of the home; a step-sister, Mrs. Wilma Granzow, Gary, In.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
