Last rites for Pvt. Roy E. Smith native of this county, and age 19 at the time of his enlistment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Smith of Crab Orchard were held at Haley’s Grove Cemetery near Crat Orchard, Nov. 18. Military honors were in charge of Cumberland County Letion Post and west-Buttram Post, VFW. Pvt. Smith enlisted in September 1943; had his basic training at Camp Wheeler in Georgia and was sent overseas in the early part of 1944. He took part in active combat with the 337th Infantry of the 85th Division; and was killed in action in Italy on May 12, 1944. Besides his parents two brothers, James Ray and Charles Everett Jr., and two sisters, Rozelle Lee and Dixonelle, survive.
