Mr. and Mrs. James Ramsey, of Hartford have been notified by wire and by a letter from the War Department that their son, Private Walter I. Ramsey, drowned in the Canal Zone on December 28.
Private Ramsey was with a Coast Artillery unit stationed near Gatun in the Canal Zone. He entered the Army on May 6 and was sent to Panama soon afterwards. The letter, dated January 5, merely stated that Private Ramsey met death by drowning on December 28. The body was recovered shortly afterwards and was buried in the Mount Hope cemetery on December 30. It will be returned here for burial after the war if the parents desire. Pvt. Ramsey is the second Cocke countian to meet death in the Canal Zone since the outbreak of the present war. Pvt. Roland Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Butler, having been killed in a plane crash there a year ago.
