PFC William Cassie Hatfield was born in 1922 in Kentucky. He was the son of John Atheatic Hatfield and Armelda Barley.He was married to Hazel Hinds.
He enlisted on 15 January 1941 at Fort McPherson Atlanta in Georgia with the Field Artillery. He died non battle on 17 June 1943 at Muscoge County, Georgia.

Fort Benning, Ga., June 17 – Premature explosions of a 105-MM shell caused the death of one soldier and injuries to eight others during a routine firing problem here yesterday, the Public Relations Office announced. Dead was Sgt. Joseph J. Zakrzewski of Philadelphia, Pa.
The injured included. Sgt. Andy W. King, Thornhill, Tenn.; Pvt. William H. Caldwell, Joelton, Tenn.; Pfc. William C. Hatfield, West Burne, Tenn., and Pvt. Edward Norman, Lafollette, Tenn.

Pfc. Hatfield succumped early Thursday at the station hospital.
