William Frank “Bill” McNutt was born 13 May 1923 in Athens, Tennessee. He was the son of James Roger McNutt and Dessie Allen Mathews.
He was killed in action on 16 November 1944 in France

Funeral services for Sgt. William F. (Billy) McNutt, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. McNutt of Athens, who was killed in action in France Nov. 16, 1944, during the last world conflict, will be held at North Athens Baptist Church. Burial will be in the cemetery at McMahan Calvary Baptist Church near Athens, with full military services conducted under the direction of McMinn County Memorial Post No. , Veterans of Foreign Wars. A salute will be given by a six-man National Guard firing squad and “taps” will be sounded by Buglar Pascal Slack.
The body of Sgt. McNutt arrived in Athens on Southern train Thursday evening from the Atlanta distribution center, accompanied by a military escort. Members of the VFW Post, and other ex-service men, relatives and friends were at the station. The remains will be at the home of his parents until the funeral hour. Sgt. McNutt enlisted for service in the U.S. Army in 1942 and received training at various centers including Arkansas, Washington, Kansas and Louisiana. He arrived in France, Sept. 13, 1944 and was with Conpany C, 114th Infantry, 44th Division. He was overseas only two months when he was struck down by enemy fire inEastern France. He attended North City school and McMinn County High school here. He was employed with a local manufacturing company when he entered service. Sgt. McNutt was of the Baptist Faith.
Besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. James W. Owens, Miss Shelby Jean McNutt, four brothers, Grover, James, Kenneth and Ivan McNutt, all of Athens.
