William Herbert Davenport was born at Pleasant View in Kentucky on 6 June 1909, to Milton Sampson “Melt” Davenport and Judy Evaline “Eva” Davenport. He lived much of his life in Bristol, Tennessee, where he was a mail carrier. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as a postal clerk with the Army’s 68th Postal Unit of the Army Postal Service. He died in active service on August 31, 1944, from non-battle causes in England of cellulitus.

His first wife was Margaret Hazel Brown Cole. He was widowed when Hazel died Sept. 29, 1937. His second wife was Mildred Ruth Whitaker.
